A Dragon Egg is obtained from the only Dragon in the game. The Ender Dragon is the fiercest and toughest mob and it slaying it is no easy task. But only then can you obtain a Dragon Egg.

What makes it even rarer is Dragon Eggs are only dropped by the first Ender Dragon you slay in the game, and not by respawned Ender Dragons.

However, in reality, Dragon Eggs serve little purpose other than being a decorative item and something to show off to your friends.

How to Get a Dragon Egg in Minecraft

First of all, you can’t hatch a Dragon Egg if you don’t have one. So, the first step is to obtain it. Unlike other Minecraft items which can be mined or crafted, the Dragon Egg is in a league of rarity by itself.

It only appears once after you have killed the Ender Dragon for the first time.

1. Beat the Ender Dragon

Prepare your Diamond Armor and Sword, and bring a bow and lots of arrows. The Ender Dragon is your toughest adversary, and no preparation is too much. Find and activate an End portal using Eyes of Ender.

You’ll need lots of this, and you can make them by combining one Ender Pearl and one Blaze Powder on a crafting table. After defeating the dragon, it will drop the egg on top of the exit portal.

If your goal is the Dragon Egg, then make sure you bring some solid blocks, a pistol, and a lever. You’ll need it later.

2. Make a Platform

Once you have defeated the Dragon, the Egg will appear on a stack of bedrock. The egg can’t be mined or collected as it is.

So you have to push it off its block. To do this, you need to build a platform using solid blocks up to Egg Level so you can place a Piston next to it.

3. Use a Piston

The dragon egg is a non-solid block, which means it can’t be pushed or moved by hand. You need to use a piston to move the egg off the exit portal.

Place the piston facing the egg and activate it with a lever to push the egg off the portal. You can snatch up the Egg after that.

Now, the big question is, can you actually learn how to hatch a Dragon Egg in Minecraft?

You can’t actually hatch Dragon Eggs literally in vanilla Minecraft and produce Baby Dragons. You need to install mods to actually do that. Whether you want to do that or simply want another Ender Dragon to appear after killing it, we got you covered.

You can technically “hatch” the egg to summon another Ender Dragon using the following methods.

How to Hatch A Dragon Egg in Minecraft In The End

This is the easier method of hatching the egg. Because in The End, the egg doesn’t need to be moved from its original location.

You only need to make 4 End Crystals and place them on the Dragon Egg pedestals.  Here are the materials you’ll need for an End Crystal:

  • One Ghast Tear
  • One Eye of Ender
  • Seven Blocks of Glass

You can craft an End Crystal by placing the Eye of Ender in the middle slot of the crafting table, then the Ghast Tear directly underneath it, and filling the remaining slots with Glass. You need 4 End Crystals to resummon the Ender Dragon.

Once you have them, place End Crystals on every side of the Exit Portal. Once you place the last Dragon Crystal, the Dragon Egg will “hatch” and a new Ender Dragon will be summoned or respawn.
